<outline type="rss" text="NSF Judiciary Campaigns" title="NSF Judiciary Campaigns" description="This year, more than 60 Supreme Court judges in 31 states will face the electorate. These judicial races have become “noisier, nastier and costlier,” with attack advertising, hefty campaign war chests and a voting public that now often insists on hearing a candidate’s “views” on divisive social questions. How does this political cacophony affect the institutional legitimacy of a branch of government that must -- by its Constitutional mandate -- remain impartial, independent and above the partisan fray?

The purpose of this project is to investigate the consequences of campaign activity on the perceived legitimacy of courts of last resort. The research proposed here is the most comprehensive effort ever launched to understand how public attitudes are being affected by the increasingly politicized tone of judicial elections. The findings will provide much-needed empirical information that can shape public policy as many states weigh how best to select state court judges.
" xmlUrl="http://communities.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org/blogs/nsfgrant/rss.aspx" htmlUrl="http://communities.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org/blogs/nsfgrant/default.aspx" />
