I think everything starts with honesty. Reporters and responsible bloggers need to make sure they are honest to their readers, their sources and themselves. Fairness flows out of honesty. Balancing objectivity and subjectivity flows out of honesty. Credibility comes out of honesty. And that means that reporters have to be honest about what they don't know, what they do know and what they think they know.
Readers feel more a direct connection to the reporter and writer when they feel the reporter is being honest and open.
This also means we have to stop exaggerating for headlines, trying to convince readers something is new when it isn't or a trend when really its just three occurrences we managed to dig up.
And I think we have to start rethinking what we define as newsworthy.
